EU Releases €30B Plan to Power AI with Gigawatt-Class Data Centers

Europe is making a bold statement in AI infrastructure: the EU’s €30 billion initiative aims to establish a network of gigawatt-scale AI data centers—each potentially hosting over 100,000 GPUs. With 13 centers initially funded (€10B) and an additional €20B reserved for larger-scale facilities, the continent is ramping up strategic capacity to match U.S. and Chinese infrastructure leadership.

The initiative has already attracted 76 expressions of interest from across 16 member states, with the first major launch slated for Munich in September 2025. While infrastructure and energy upgrades remain a key challenge, the project offers significant opportunities in:

  • Sustainable engineering and power systems design

  • Modular data center architecture

  • Project management and green infrastructure deployment
